Proper footwear is crucial for aging adults to maintain mobility, stability and comfort while preventing falls.  As feet change with age, often becoming flatter or losing cushioning, shoes with strong arch support, firm heel counters and nonslip soles are essential to prevent pain and injuries.

Key aspects:

  • Fall prevention: Seniors should avoid loose slippers, high heels and thin-soled shoes that offer no stability, but rather utilize running or walking shoes.
  • Comfort and support: Shoes should have adequate cushioning to reduce joint strain and support the arch to prevent pain in the feet, knees, hips and low back.
  • Professional assessment: It is advisable to have feet measured regularly as foot size can change and to consult a podiatrist for specific foot conditions.

Important features:

  • Nonslip soles (rubber for traction)
  • Firm heel counters (keep the heel in place)
  • Secure fastening (Velcro or laces prevent slipping.)
  • Wide toe box (prevents blisters and corns)

Prioritizing appropriate footwear ensures better balance and independence, reducing risks associated with walking on hard or uneven surfaces.
